Ethel & Ernest [above], the adaptation of Raymond Briggs’s tribute to his parents on BBC1, was a delight. They were so typical of a generation who lived through hard times with stoicism and humour. Their aspirations for a better life and their tenderness towards each other will have resonated with so many.
