The Big Painting Challenge 6PM, BBC1

Mariella Frostrup and the Rev Richard Coles are the new hosts as the search for Britain’s best amateur artist begins. Ten enthusiastic painters (including Camilla, right) will each week face two challenges as they try to unleash their inner Picasso and claim the title. The first is a still life challenge in which they have to capture a table laden with objects, while the second sees them giving their own interpretations of works by Vincent van Gogh and Roy Lichtenstein. It pays to have a steady hand.

Countryfile Winter Special 7PM, BBC1

In this winter special, Ellie Harrison is in Scotland on a wildlife safari in the Cairngorms National Park, which is home to 25 per cent of Britain’s threatened wildlife species, while John Craven is in Filey in Yorkshire to learn the history of the fisherman’s ‘gansey’, a winter woolly jumper with a distinctive pattern.

Call The Midwife 8PM, BBC1

There aren’t many laughs in this week’s downbeat visit to Nonnatus House as Trixie comes to the aid of a single woman who is struggling to cope as she prepares to give birth to her third child. So when the new mum’s childless cousin offers her financial support in return for her baby, she faces an agonising decision.

British Academy Film Awards 9PM, BBC1

Stephen Fry presents the starstudded awards ceremony from the Albert Hall. Feel-good musical La La Land is expected to dominate, but there’s plenty of British interest with Emily Blunt (The Girl On The Train), Dev Patel (Lion), Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) all nominated.
