Edgar Wallace wrote like a man possessed, and was nicknamed

‘the fiction factory’. He turned out shelves of fiction, including The Four Just Men, as well as poetry, nonfiction, plays and film scripts. Wallace, who took up writing because of his debts, sold around 50 million copies of his books. Mark Billingham tells the story of a man – born illegitima­te in 1875 to an impoverish­ed actress – who was the bestsellin­g author of his day, yet died in Hollywood, deeply in debt.

Finding himself locked overnight in his favourite pub, Bernard works his way through the vodka, while sharing often bitter and foul-mouthed anecdotes of old Soho. Nasty, but very funny.
