MATTHEW JUKES’ WINE LIST
Six stunners from the annual Great New Zealand Wine Tasting
1
2016 Tinpot Hut, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough
£13.95, Noel Young, 01223 566744
With masses of independent stockists this week, please see matthewjukes.com for loads more retailers all over the UK. This Tinpot Hut is a stellar sauvignon bursting with epic citrus fruit.
2
2013 Waipara Springs, Chardonnay, Canterbury
£13.95, South Downs Cellars, 01273 833830 This was one of the most restrained and classy chardonnays of the whole tasting. The value here is incredible given its finesse. Drink it with the Chicken Casserole With Bacon & Mushrooms recipe.
3
2014 Stanley Estates, Lagrein, Marlborough
£15.75, Halifax Wine Company, 01422 256333
The lagrein grape hails from northern Italy; this NZ version is incredible. The crisp red cherry notes work brilliantly with the Pulled Pork With Sweet Barbecue Sauce & Spicy Coleslaw.
4
2016 Peter Yealands, Reserve, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough
£11.59, Waitrose
From the famous Yealands estate, this Reserve is a step up from the versions sold in Sainsbury’s and the Co-op: the flavours are more intense and regal. Drink with the Slow-Roast Salmon With Fennel, Lemon And Chilli.
5
2016 Jules Taylor, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough
£16.95, Vagabond, 020 7381 1717
My top sauvignon of the whole tasting was this, Jules Taylor’s scintillating version. The depth of flavour and Zen-like delivery is a wonder to behold. Another winner with the Salmon recipe.
2014 The Edge, Pinot Noir, Martinborough, New Zealand. £13.99, Waitrose
Martinborough, a small region in the North Island, produces fine pinot noirs. Larry McKenna’s Escarpment winery makes The Edge – it is one of the best-value ones going. Pair with the Slow-Roasted Spiced Lamb Shanks.
