Like Endeavour did with Inspector Morse, this promising six-part series imagines the early days of a great fictional detective – in this case, one of the best female characters TV has ever seen. She may be a rookie, but 22-year-old WPC Jane Tennison (Stefanie Martini, right, with Sam Reid) is a bright spark. It’s 1973, and when her misogynistic, Life On Mars-style male superiors realise that she’s capable of more than just making tea and answering phones, Jane finds herself thrown into her first murder investigation – that of a young woman in east London.
