Two youngsters, from very different background­s, are on their way to an interview for a place at a Cambridge college. The only thing they have in common is that their parents are a source of constant embarrassm­ent to them. Hugh (Ben Miles) keeps giving his daughter useless interview advice. Shani (Pooky Quesnel) watches out for cracks in the pavement, lone magpies and other omens of ill luck that might stop her son making it to Cambridge. All of them are united in this warm, funny and beautifull­y observed drama, set in 1996 and written by the late Jack Rosenthal.

5PM, CLASSIC FM Andrew Collins plays music with a magic and fantasy theme today, and includes tracks from the Harry Potter, Narnia and Lord Of The Rings films, plus Danny Elfman’s score for Edward Scissorhan­ds and music from Princess Mononoke.

The oldest writing ever discovered dates back more than 5,000 years to a settlement on the River Euphrates in what is now Iraq. The wedgeshape­d figures cut into wet clay have an orderly, attractive appearance. Tim Hartford tells us about this early script, and gives us the disappoint­ing news that cuneiform wasn’t used for great works – but for accounts.

Buck Clayton, Count Basie’s trumpet star, spent a chunk of his career in Shanghai with his dapper band, the Harlem Gentlemen. His career was cut short by essential lip surgery, but he left a body of recordings of great jam sessions, some of which feature on the show tonight. SJ
