The first privately managed prison in Britain since the 19th century went into business 25 years ago; now, 14 UK prisons are in private hands. There have been – as in state-run facilities – deaths in custody, escapes, riots, staffing crises and heavy drug abuse. Matthew Gwyther considers the effect that the profit motive has had on the way our prisons are run.
