The Book Of Life

(2014) U Sunday, 2.30pm, Ch4 Beautifully animated feature, set around Day of the Dead celebrations, that invites its audience to an intoxicating fiesta of Mexican folklore. The residents of San Angel remember their lost loved ones, while two rival gods – La Muerte, the ruler of the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten – make a wager. The deities back two different villagers – Manolo and Joaquin – to win the heart of pure and pretty Maria (above, with Joaquin and Manolo). But Xibalba doesn’t play fair, leading Manolo on an adventure between the worlds of the living and the dead. Children will find the characters enchanting, while adults can marvel at the sophistication of the stunning animation and listen out for catchy new versions of songs by the likes of Radiohead and Rod Stewart.
