Vibrant and funny animation, set in Mexico around the famous Day of the Dead celebrations – Mexican folklore makes for a stunning backdrop. Though the mythology might be a little too scary and complex for younger children, it’s thrilling for older children – and fully grown ones, too.

Tom Hiddleston’s troublesome Loki, adoptive brother of hero with a hammer Thor, has a fleshed-out role in this lively sequel. Christopher Eccleston – unrecognisable in Elven makeup – is the bad guy, and Loki is on hand to help and possibly also hinder the good guys.

Writer David Ayer (Training Day) is on familiar ground, following LA beat cops, for his directorial breakthrough. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena are officers and friends who are ‘greenlit’ – marked for death – after putting drug and sex traffickers out of business. Gritty, but pretty routine stuff.
