EASTENDERS

-

When is enough real ly enough? How long do you keep a body under a cemented floor before the locals discover it’s been there for years? How long before someone diagnosed with a terminal illness dies? How long before an illicit affair is discovered?

Knowing when to stop is a key issue producers and writers face in storytelling. In Coronation Street, the end of the brilliant plot of Nathan drawing Bethany into his evil web is imminent; likewise, Eva’s discovery of Aidan and Maria’s affair. Emmerdale had Ashley’s dementia storyline, which won the show many awards. And in EastEnders… Denise was looking for a sandwich ( hold the front page! This was a storyline that should never have started, let alone dragged on so long).

But another question is, how long before you introduce another major thread? I can’t help feeling that Johnny’s discovery he has multiple sclerosis in the Street is way too soon on top of everything else. Yes, it’s a hugely important issue and will doubtless help many; but there’s such a thing as overkill, too. Come on, Corrie, we all need a good laugh. NOT SO FURRY FRIEND As Mick prepares a surprise party for Linda’s 40th, Dot is making preparations for Patrick’s big day. Alas, disaster strikes when she trips over Dave and crashes to the ground. For a black cat, Dave hasn’t brought Dot much luck. Early on, she thought he’d been eaten by a fox; now, he’s a would-be assassin.

As Dot lies injured and unable to move (above), she calls out to Patrick, who can’t hear her. No surprises there – his hat almost permanently covers his ears. But Sonia comes to the rescue, and as Dot – who’s told she’ll need a hip operation – is taken away in an ambulance

(inset picture), Sonia is furious with locals who should have been keeping an eye on her.

Is it me or are we seeing more people in the medical profession than ever before? Oh, for the days when it was just Dr Legg handing out aspirin. Today, we have gynaecologists, psychiatrists, paramedics…

Let’s hope Linda’s birthday is more successful, but with Mick on edge and Fi turning up unexpectedly, how likely is that? There’s a small bit of good cheer when, during the celebrations, one resident makes peace with another. It won’t last. Throw another cat among the pigeons, I say.
