The artist behind The Great Wave (left) had a flair for innovation, as this absorbing new profile reveals. While he was showing his skills to the shogun, Hokusai dipped a rooster’s feet in red ink and let it scamper across a blue painting, calling the result Autumn Leaves On The Tatsuta River.
