To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of Luciano Pavarotti, Verity Sharp introduces a recording of one of the great tenor’s most memorable performances. Pavarotti’s life was changed for ever after he took on the role of lovesick Tyrolean peasant Tonio in Donizetti’s La
Fille De Regiment at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. On that night in 1972, he hit all the top notes, left his audience in disbelief, and earned the nickname ‘King of the High Cs’. This is a 1973 performance of the same opera with Pavarotti joined on stage by Joan Sutherland.
