Throughout the Second World War, fire wardens kept a constant watch on St Paul’s Cathedral, but on October 9, 1940, the Luftwaffe scored a hit on Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. A bomb pierced the dome and shattered the high altar, yet the rest of the cathedral was unharmed. Jane Jones marks the anniversary of the event with music inspired by a magnificent building.
