Oysters were farmed as long ago as 1381 in Northumberland. It seems that the shrewd monks of Lindisfarne Priory bought a boatload of oysters off an equally shrewd Scotsman for 100 shillings, and set up oyster beds. The beds fell into disuse, but were rediscovered and restored in 1881; they have been managed by the Sutherland family since 1989. Helen Mark visits this beautiful coastline, and hears from Christopher Sutherland about the oyster business.

Charlotte has made a point of featuring young, up-and-coming musicians on her new Sunday classical music show. Today, she plays recordings by the French trumpet player Lucienne Renaudin Vary. Lucienne, who was born in 1999, studied jazz and classical trumpet, and now tours the world, dazzling audiences with her playing.

Ignaz Pleyel was the 24th child of 38, born to an impoverished Austrian schoolteacher. His talent lifted him out of abject poverty, and he became a pianist, music publisher, piano-maker and Jane Austen’s favourite composer. Catherine Bott features some of Pleyel’s music tonight, and plays scores from some of the many film and TV adaptations of Austen’s novels. SJ
