He’s currently starring as tormented father Jim in Kiri (9pm, Ch4), but Steven, 50, has turned his hand to a wide variety of roles throughout his career…

Born and brought up in Cambridges­hire, Steven made his acting debut at the age of 12 with a small part in a play at the Bush Theatre in London. After leaving school at 16, he landed the lead role in the National Theatre’s production of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs.

It was while working on Brighton Beach Memoirs that he met his future wife, Lisa Jacobs – ‘I was playing a character who was obsessed with his cousin, Nora, and she was Nora.’ They married in 1989, and have two daughters, Martha and Blythe – ‘My family are the most important thing to me.’

His TV credits include Prime Suspect, Luther, Our Mutual Friend, The Halcyon, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, What Remains, The Jury, A Song

For Jenny, Inside Men and From There To Here.

He made his big-screen debut playing the actor Simon Ward in Prick Up Your Ears (1987). Steven is still stopped in the street by fans of his character, Winston, in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998). He has a nice sideline in voice-over work, and his mellifluou­s tones can be heard narrating numerous documentar­ies including An Hour To Save Your Life,
