GOLDEN MOMENTS: Blue Peter
In honour of Blue Peter’s 5,000th episode, broadcast today, we look back on the trailblazing children’s show (5.30pm, CBBC) and some of its many highlights…
Animal magic: The show airs live, and the resident pets often amble in and out of shot as the presenters soldier on. The first Blue Peter pet, a dog called Petra, was actually a stand-in – the original puppy died shortly after her first appearance in 1962. Rather than upset viewers, then editor Biddy Baxter recruited a replacement puppy – and kept the switch a secret until 2008.
Don’t work with animals: In addition to the resident pets, animal guests regularly overrun the studio – notably an elephant called Lulu; in 1969, she famously relieved herself live on air.
Badge of honour: The gold Blue Peter badge is the most exclusive. It has been awarded to a handful of inspirational role models, including David Attenborough and, in 2017, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (left). The Queen received her gold badge in her Golden Jubilee year, 2002. To celebrate today’s 5,000th episode, fashion designer Henry Holland has designed a new diamond badge.
Congratulations: The show has seen many firsts, including a broadcast of presenter Tina Heath’s pregnancy scan, in 1980 – the first time an ultrasound scan had been seen on television.
Cyber era: It may be nearly 60 years old, but Blue Peter has always innovated. It was one of the first British TV shows to launch a website and, in 2011, was the first to broadcast in 360⁰, enabling online viewers to interact with the studio.
