Art For The Millions

The theatre critic Walter Kerr once cruelly described Orson Welles as ‘the world’s youngest has-been’. This programme about Roosevelt’s New Deal covers a creative and dynamic period in Welles’s life.

The US government funded many art programmes, and Welles – already a star of screen and radio – became involved in the Federal Theatre Project. He threw himself into this project, bringing new plays and modern versions of classics to the stage, and drawing new audiences to the theatre.

Marcus Brigstocke, who has been teetotal for more than 20 years , has written his first drama for radio. Starring Marcus, along with David Calder and Rufus Jones, it tells the story of Benedict, who’s been sober for 25 years – and learns that he’s inherited some very fine wines from his father. This is a stylish, witty and honest piece of drama that draws on experience to give a realistic account of the day-today life of a recovering alcoholic.

Phantom Thread has Day-Lewis playing a successful dress designer who creates stunning clothes for the rich and beautiful of 1950s London. Then, love comes into the couturier’s life, and things start to fall apart. Its director, Paul Thomas Anderson, talks about the film this afternoon.
