ON SCREEN: High-school musicals

Zombies (6pm, Disney) is the latest in a tradition of school musicals about love across the cliques – in this case, between a zombie and a cheerleader. Here, we look at some favourites…

-

Grease (1978) The romance of greaser Danny (John Travolta) and goody two shoes Sandy (Olivia NewtonJohn) is at the core of this movie, based on a musical first performed in 1971. Grease set the template for a lot of what followed. (Sky On Demand and Now TV)

High School Musical (2006-08) Disney’s trilogy began on TV, but was such a hit that the third part was released in cinemas. It turns on the love of basketball captain Troy (Zac Efron, in his breakout role) for maths whiz Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens). (Disney Life, iTunes)

Glee (2009-15) The rivalry between the glee (musical) club and the cheerleaders, led by the fearsome Sue Sylvester, is the driving force of this US series from Ryan Murphy (American Crime Story) – although it also has numerous clique-crossing romances. (iTunes)

Sing Street (2016) Awkward new boy Conor rises to the level of rebellious school hero through his music – and even attracts the attention of an impossibly cool girl – in a spirit-soaring musical set in Dublin, 1985. A joy, even more so if you like 1980s music. (Netflix)
