Pachelbel’s Canon In D is a soothing piece of music that can, because of overuse, drive people round the bend. Written in the 1690s, it faded into silence over the centuries, but was rediscover­ed in the 20th century. It is hugely popular for weddings and funerals, and is overused in films and adverts. All this week, Donald Macleod unravels the musical legacy of a composer who did so much more than write one simple but effective piece.
