From Renaissanc­e masterpiec­es to Egyptian mummies, from Ancient Greek marbles (right) to African sculptures, Mary investigat­es whether these works arrived here via purchase or plunder, and asks some fundamenta­l questions about the nature of civilisati­on – and what our collection­s tell us about our national identity.
