In this one-off to accompany the Civilisations series, Mary Beard tours Britain in search of the astonishing works of art from all four corners of the Earth that reside in our national collections. From Renaissance masterpieces to Egyptian mummies, from Ancient Greek marbles (right) to African sculptures, Mary investigates whether these works arrived here via purchase or plunder, and asks some fundamental questions about the nature of civilisation – and what our collections tell us about our national identity.
