As sure as autumn follows summer, the entertainment juggernaut that is Strictly Come Dancing series 16 roars into view over the horizon in a cloud of sequins and dry ice. Tonight, Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly will be introducing the stars – including Katie Piper (right) – to the professional dancers whose pockets they will be living in for the next three months. Then, in timehonoured Strictly tradition, they’ll take to the dance floor for the first time, beneath the famous twirling glitterball, to show us their early moves.

After eight intensive weeks, the BBC Proms reaches its finale tonight. With veteran conductor Andrew Davis at the helm, it goes out in flag-waving traditional style with a programme that includes music by Stanford and Berlioz, plus the signature soaring sing-along sign-off.
