FACE IS FAMILIAR: Charlotte Riley
One of the stars of Press (9pm, BBC1), Charlotte Riley, 36, is someone we’ll undoubtedly be seeing a lot more of in the future. Here’s where you may have seen her before…
Early days: Born in County Durham, Charlotte grew up in a village near Stockton-on-Tees. After achieving a degree in English and linguistics from Durham University – where she was a member of the Durham Revue – she spent some time teaching drama to young adults and children with disabilities, an experience she credits with helping her to decide to study acting at Lamda (2005-07).
The role that changed everything:
After various bit parts, Charlotte was cast as Cathy in a 2009 ITV adaptation of Wuthering Heights, co-starring Tom Hardy as Heathcliff; the pair were reunited that same year in the Sky One drama The Take. Such was the chemistry between them on and
off the screen that it came as little surprise when they got engaged the following year. They married in 2014, and have a child together, plus Tom’s son from an earlier relationship.
Acting the part: Charlotte has appeared in numerous TV shows including Holby City, Inspector George Gently, Foyle’s War, DCI Banks, Jonathan Strange &
Mr Norrell, Peaky Blinders and Close
To The Enemy. Last year, she played Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, in the BBC drama King Charles III. She has a role in the recent big-screen Britcom Swimming With Men, and can be seen this week in the new BBC drama Trust (Wednesday, 9pm, BBC2); later this year, she will be in ITV’s Dark Heart.
