Muted drama about the dark art of spying and the toll it takes, based on a John le Carre novel. In one of his final roles, Philip Seymour Hoffman (above) is excellent as a weary intelligen­ce officer tasked with finding jihadis in Germany where, post-9/ 11, the atmosphere is tense.

Slow and ponderous sci-fi thriller, starring Terence Stamp as a man who has been in a coma since he was born. Woken up at the age of 30, his ‘birth’ is broadcast to the scientific community, while his first steps are carefully managed. What can possibly go wrong?
