Sounds And Sweet Airs
9PM, CLASSIC FM
Julian of Norwich was a 14thcentury English mystic, nun and writer whose work includes the comforting text, ‘And all shall be well, and all shall be well.’ The London-born composer Roxanna Panufnik has taken this text and woven it into a beautiful choral work, which sounds both ancient and modern. Debbie Wiseman includes it in this selection of work by women composers celebrating courage in the face of adversity.
Between the Ears: The Last Elfdalians
9.30PM, RADIO 3 Elfdalian sounds like something out of The Hobbit, but it’s a real language spoken by people who live in a remote forest region of Sweden. It is ‘soft, kind and full of humour’, but dying out. Maja Daniels, whose ancestors spoke Elfdalian, takes us on a journey into this language, but, as Maja hasn’t bothered to learn Elfdalian, she gives us few linguistic insights into this ancient tongue.
