IN HER OWN WORDS: Karren Brady
Appointed managing director at Birmingham City FC in 1993, she joined The Apprentice (9pm, BBC1) in 2010, and became a life peer in 2014. Here’s what Baroness Brady, 49, has had to say… On the effect of attending an all-girl
Catholic boarding school: ‘You do what you’re told, you wear what you’re told, you eat what you’re told, you go to bed when you’re told…
The one thing I wanted was independence.
And I realised to have that independence, you needed financial independence.’
On estimates that place her fortune at £85 million:
‘That’s complete rubbish, I’m not worth anything like that. That’s Wikipedia.’
On her approach to fitness:
‘I couldn’t think of anything worse than drinking a load of gunkygreen stuff and sweating in a gym. I would rather sit in front of the TV and have a glass of wine.’
On her wardrobe for The Apprentice:
‘A few days before filming starts, I’ll buy 30 outfits and I’ll rotate them through the series. I go online. I’m a terrible shopper. I hate it. I can’t tell you the last time I went into a shop. At the end of the series, I give all the dresses away to staff, friends or charities. I never keep anything.’
On taking just three days’ maternity leave when her first child (of two) was born in 1996:
‘I just felt this overwhelming sense of responsibility that I had to be there, and I couldn’t let people down… And it just manifested itself in very little maternity leave. It’s something I deeply regret. It’s not something I would ever encourage.’
