The Ballads Of The Great War – 1915

Zeppelin air raids on Britain began in January 1915, bringing the war horribly closer to civilians. These airships were to drop 5,000 bombs, but were largely abandoned by 1917 because they were cumbersome, ineffectiv­e and easily blown off course. Their effect on morale, though, was devastatin­g. Some of the fear these raids engendered is reflected in these First World War-themed songs performed by John Tams, Martin Carthy, Chris While, Julie Matthews, Jez Lowe, Barbara Dickson and Heidi Talbot.
