Sparrows had a price on their heads in Britain during the First World
War. German U-boats targeted ships bringing food to these shores, and sparrows were seen as pests that threatened crops. While ‘anti-sparrow clubs’ were formed in Britain to kill the birds, soldiers on the Western Front were cheered by the sight of sparrows hopping around the churned-up terrain. The author Derek Niemann describes how sparrows survived the carnage, and managed to live among the bombed-out buildings in the desolate wartime landscape.

The comedian Nina Conti is one of the guests for this edition of a programme set in an imaginary museum. The curators are the Professor of Ignorance John Lloyd and the comedian Lee Mack. Nina’s fellow guests are Daisy Goodwin, creator of the TV series Victoria, and the former Cabinet Secretary Lord Butler of Brockwell. They will be discussing the magical properties of false teeth, the prominent contribution made by Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert, and the mysterious case of 30 Russian jet fighters found buried in the sand.

Thomas Dunford began playing the lute when he was nine years old, and made his performance debut, aged 14, as a lutenist in a production of Twelfth Night. He has been nicknamed the ‘Eric Clapton of the lute’, and Charlotte features his work on today’s show.
