Children In Need:

D For Dexter

10.45AM,

7.45PM, RADIO 4

Every so often, Radio 4 delivers a drama that sounds like a boxticking exercise for a good cause. These dramas often get shortlisted for awards, are very worthy, and are not very good. This returning series, about a bright girl born to a family beset by problems, has taken a turn very much for the better. It sounds sharper and far more professional than previous series, and earns its place in the schedules for its quality – and not just its subject matter.

Composer Of The Week

12 NOON, RADIO 3

The Rossini Code was a sort of musical recipe, cooked up by the Italian composer, that delivered success after success. In this first of a week-long series on Gioachino Rossini, Donald Macleod unpicks the Rossini Code.

I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue

6.30PM, RADIO 4

The old lags are back with some daft new games for another series of radio’s funniest, silliest quiz show. Jack Dee’s in the chair, and he’ll be asking Tim BrookeTaylor, Barry Cryer, Tony Hawks and John Finnemore to come up with entries for the Personalised Song Book. Don’t Cry For Me Marge & Tina and I Can See Deirdre Now Lorraine Has Gone are on the list.

Marc Riley

7PM, BBC 6 MUSIC

Mr Ben & The Bens are, as their name suggests, an oddball group. Their songs are quirky and their style eccentric. They are also rather good, as you can hear tonight when they perform tracks from their new EP, Happy Shopper.

Jools Holland

9PM, RADIO 2

Charlie Worsham performs live on Jools’s show tonight. Charlie is a rising country music star who found critical success – but not a great deal of money – playing mandolin and singing harmonies with the band KingBilly. Then, he appeared as a support act for Taylor Swift and other big stars, and his solo career really took off. The Spanish keyboard maestro Julian Maeso is also on the show, and he too will be pitching in with Jools and the band for a live session.
