Costing The Earth

3.30PM, RADIO 4

Wet wipes kill marine life, pollute the seas, float down canals and form foul-smelling mounds on river beds. They are choking the Earth to death, and are probably building up into a nasty blockage in a sewer near you right now.

Tom Heap investigates this entirely avoidable environmental crisis.

The Robert Peston Interview Show

6.30PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA

Eric Sykes, Denis Norden and Ron Rich were in the RAF in northern Germany, entertaining the troops. They needed some equipment, and were sent to a nearby camp. That camp was Bergen-Belsen, and what the three young performers saw there was to haunt them for the rest of their lives. In this archive programme, we hear the muchmissed Mr Norden recalling that moment, as well happier events in his long and successful career.

Jamie Cullum

8PM, RADIO 2

The great Jeff Goldblum has been playing jazz in Los Angeles clubs for more than 30 years in between his acting jobs. Tonight, Jeff joins Jamie in the atmospheric but doomed Maida Vale studios to talk about music. Then, Jeff – who has been playing piano since he was a lad, and is no slouch at the keyboard – joins his band, the humorously named Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, for a studio session, with Jamie chipping in on vocals.

Bruno Tonioli At The Opera

9PM, RADIO 2

Verdi kept his big aria for the

Duke in Rigoletto a secret until the last minute. Even the man who was to sing it at the opera’s Venice debut was kept in the dark until close to curtain-up. Verdi knew that, once La Donna E Mobile got out, every gondolier would be belting it out up and down the Grand Canal, spoiling Verdi’s big moment. The Strictly Come Dancing judge includes this world-famous aria in the second of his series on great tunes from operas.
