MATTHEW JUKES’ WINE LIST
A fruity beauty from a sun-soaked Greek isle is among this week’s treats
1 2015 Katnook, Founder’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, South Australia
£12.99, Waitrose Katnook’s pioneering chief winemaker, Wayne Stehbens, passed away last year, and this was a classic Wayne creation, with a rich cassis palate augmented with mint and eucalyptus tones.
2 2016 M Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Feudo Antico, Italy
£12.99, reduced to £8.99, mailwine club.co.uk; £12.99, virginwines.co.uk
The stellar 2016 vintage has left its indelible mark on this dark-fruited red. Big, powerful and imposing, it casts a long shadow of flavour on your palate.
3 2017 Mandeville, Pinot Noir, Pays d’Oc, France
£9, Marks & Spencer Light yet impressive, this has masses of red fruit and a herbal tang on the finish. You can chill it a touch for spicy main courses or drink it with tuna and other meaty fish. It’s so nimble, even die-hard white-wine fans will fall for it.
4 2017 Castelliere, Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, Italy
£4.75, Morrisons There’s precious little budget pinot grigio around that’s worth a mention, but now and again one will catch my eye – like this stunner. What’s more, decent wines under a fiver will soon be a thing of the past, so do give this a try.
5 2016 Lirac Blanc, Château d’Aqueria, Rhône, France
£16.75, Booths Supermarkets I’ve saved you a few quid on the pinot grigio on the left so you can splash out on this luxurious beauty. With incredible stone-fruit notes on the nose and a full-bodied, rich palate, it’s a really enthralling white.
