FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME...
1 I can milk a cow! I learned how to on Far From The Madding Crowd in 2015 for the role of farmer Bathsheba Everdene – once you know how, you never forget. I was born in London but I’m happy in the country – I’m very comfortable in wellies.

Apart from my family, my most precious possession is a box on my windowsill of things I’ve collected, including letters, theatre stubs, and birthday cards from people who are important to me. If I had to leave suddenly and take one thing, that would be it.
3
Usually I’m a fan of Airbnb, except for one terrible experience I had a couple of years ago in New York, where the place looked nothing like the advert. My mum was staying with me and saw a mouse, which she didn’t tell me at the time! I stuck it out, but it was terrible.

I love jewellery, especially from Fred Leighton in New York, because he has stunning antique things. But I don’t really buy jewellery – I’m afraid of losing it. I borrow pieces to wear in public sometimes, then I always hand them straight back because I’m scared I’ll drop them down the sofa!

One year at the Golden Globes I got to meet Amy Adams, who I’m a huge fan of. When, at the end of the evening, everyone gets up from their tables to leave and you can’t really move, I took the chance to speak to her. She was very nice.
