DID YOU KNOW? Ade Adepitan

-

As Ade, 45, begins the third part of his tour around his homeland in Africa With Ade Adepitan (9pm, BBC2), we look at some things you might not know about the presenter…

Ade was born in Lagos, Nigeria on March 27, 1973. At the age of just 15 months, he contracted polio, which caused the loss of function of his left leg, and left him with only partial use of his right leg. As a result, he uses a wheelchair.

His earliest memory is ‘driving through lots of trees on the way to Lagos airport. I was three when my parents took me to the UK to give me the chance of better healthcare and a better life.’

Ade is an accomplished wheelchair basketball player, and was a member of the Great Britain team that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Paralympics

in Athens and the gold medal at the 2005 Paralympic

World Cup in Manchester.

Last year, he married the Scottish singer Linda Harrison, 28, in St Paul’s Cathedral.

The pair met when Linda was 19 and had gate-crashed the National Television Awards, which Ade was attending; they got engaged in 2015.

He speaks fluent Spanish after playing professional basketball in Spain for two years during the 1990s, and is obsessed with the TV show Game Of Thrones.

In 2005, Ade was awarded an MBE for services to disability sport.
