The YPJ, or Women’s Protection Units, is an all-female army in Rojava, northern Syria. Formed to protect the Kurdish population, the YPJ and its male counterparts have been remarkably successful at holding ISIS at bay. In 2017, Sussex-born activist Anna Campbell travelled to Rojava and joined the YPJ – not only to fight, but to support the burgeoning democracy. She died a few months later. In this startling film, Anna’s father, Dirk (right, with YPJ fighters), explores why his daughter took up arms for what she believed.
