These ancient Greeks, famed for the heroic last stand of ‘the 300’ at Thermopyla­e, were warrior citizens, and the women of Sparta had sexual and social freedom. Their slaves, however, were treated with terrible cruelty. Bridget Kendall hears about Spartan society, its authoritar­ian rule, and its policy of racial purity.
