These ancient Greeks, famed for the heroic last stand of ‘the 300’ at Thermopylae, were warrior citizens, and the women of Sparta had sexual and social freedom. Their slaves, however, were treated with terrible cruelty. Bridget Kendall hears about Spartan society, its authoritarian rule, and its policy of racial purity.
