The Lord God bird is, or was, one of the world’s biggest woodpeckers. The bird got its name because of its great beauty – people would gasp ‘Lord God!’ when they saw it. It is likely to be extinct, but there have been some fairly reliable sightings of the bird – also known as the ivory-billed woodpecker – in Arkansas. We hear from those who are sure it lives on, their words interwoven with a ballad by Sufjan Stevens in praise of the bird.
