The star of the Lake District drama reveals five secrets from the set

- Anna Friel

1 This isn’t a comedy – it’s about three women trying to cope with challenging lives – but there were some very funny moments during filming. One was when my character, Lisa, who runs a kennels business, was trying to coax some excitable dogs into the back of her van. I was going one way and the dogs were pulling me in the other. Hilarious to watch, apparently!

2 The Lake District’s not made for filming. The lanes were too narrow for the production vehicles so we’d change and eat in village halls. Then there were the scenes set right up in the hills. To get to one location we used a Land Rover, then a quad bike and then an off-road vehicle. We spent so much time travelling, due to the vast size of the Lake District, that the three leading actresses never had a chance to get together for a drink and chat. Maybe next time.

3 All three main actresses had to film intimate scenes, which are just so unsexy to do. It’s all ‘you put your hand here and I’ll put mine there’. About as sexy as a freezing-cold dip in a lake!

4 Rosalind Eleazar, who plays Lisa’s friend Kate, did actually have to get wet. The lake water was freezing and the stunt woman told her the cold would take her breath away and not to panic. She had to stay under for several seconds but came through it unscathed.

5 The key to working with children is to get to know them before you film. I got on really well with Nell, Leo and Jake, who play Lisa’s daughter and sons – Sally, Sam and James – and the friendships we forged off-screen made it easier to improvise when the cameras were rolling.
