Ignaz Semmelweis noticed this, and insisted his students washed their hands. Many of his colleagues took this as an insult and mocked him. The poor man suffered a breakdown, and died from an infection on his hand in a mental asylum. Lindsey Fitzharris tells the story of the man who became known as the ‘saviour of mothers’.
