GREAT BRITISH SHIPS

8.30PM, CH5 ★★★★

Rob Bell explores 400 years of British maritime history through its most spectacular ships. This episode looks at the incredible story of the Endeavour, a Royal Navy research vessel (right) that famously transported Captain Cook and his crew halfway around the world, from Plymouth to Australia. Originally a coal ship, or barque, this sturdy, flat-bottomed boat was tough enough for the perilous job of crossing the Pacific Ocean. Cook’s mission? To reach the unexplored southern hemisphere, and claim it for the British Empire.

GREAT BRITISH CAR JOURNEYS

8PM, CH4 ★★★★ Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison pack a bucket and spade for a trip to the seaside. They start on the southern edge of the New Forest, and pootle west along the dynamic Jurassic Coast. Along the way, they get behind the wheel of Bessie, the roadster driven by Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who.
