PICK OF THE DAY
LONG LOST FAMILY SPECIAL: THE UNKNOWN SOLDIERS
9PM, ITV ★★★★ Every year, the remains of around 60 British servicemen are found across the world. Those remains are then referred to the all-female team of ‘war detectives’ at the Ministry of Defence, who try to put names to the cases and make contact with the families. In this moving one-off special, Davina Mccall (right) goes to Anneux in France to speak to local man Olivier – in French, no less – to learn more about three bodies he found, before the war detectives take up the investigation. It takes some fascinating and poignant turns.
CORONATION STREET ICONS
8PM, ITV ★★★
On April 16, 1979 – more than 40 years ago – Sue Nicholls made her Corrie debut as an unwelcome guest at daughter Gail’s engagement party. On arriving, she uttered the immortal words: ‘Have you got a fella for me?’ It’s that kind of brassy charm that turned Audrey into a Corrie fixture, as this warm tribute illustrates.
TRAVEL MAN
8.30PM, CH4 ★★★
Stephen Merchant joins host Richard Ayoade in Dubrovnik, Croatia, for a new series of the show in which there are almost as many gags as facts. They visit the spot of the
‘walk of shame’ in Game Of Thrones, which Ayoade says he’s never seen, and which inspires Merchant to spout showbiz stories about its stars.
THE DAY CALIFORNIA BURNED
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★
Nearly a year ago, fire swept through northern California, killing 85 people and leaving 30,000 without their homes. This documentary compresses hundreds of hours of footage into a single moving account of the deadliest fire in the US for 100 years, and asks why it happened. ROBIN WIGGS
