PICK OF THE DAY
SNOW ANIMALS
7PM, BBC1 ★★★★
Humans think they have it hard when the shops shut at Christmas, but spare a thought for the animals roaming subzero lands with nary a Tesco in sight. How do they cope? For them, like us, preparation is key. As Liz Bonnin reveals, creatures such as the Siberian chipmunk squirrel away autumn’s bounty to build up a winter larder. To stretch the shopping analogy further, the canny chipmunks have shopping bag-like expandable cheeks that can be used to gather 165 acorns a day. Bonnin also looks at the tactics of reindeer, polar bears (right) and snowshoe hares.

So, who out of the Globetrotters and the Eurovisionaries will be able to see the connections between things that at first seem to have none? Or will you at home beat them both to the punch?
