JURA

2.15PM, RADIO 4 HHHH Eric Blair, better-known as George Orwell, spent two years living on Jura. Blair was suffering from the TB that was to end his life, but he was determined to write another book. He felt the clean air and the serenity of Jura would help him, but he brought his own troubles with him to the island. Despite this, as we hear in this last of four plays about the writer’s life, he buckled down to writing his enduring work Nineteen Eighty-four.

IN TUNE

5PM, RADIO 3 HHHH

The countertenor Andreas Scholl has a new album out called Twilight People. It includes songs in the folk tradition from Vaughan Williams, Copland and other classical composers, with piano

FREE THINKING

10PM, RADIO 3 HHHHH Bartenders, priests, radio producers and CIA agents make good listeners, but most people are terrible at listening. We talk across each other, and are so busy thinking about what to say next that we hardly hear anyone else. Kate Murphy, a witty contributor to The New York Times, tells us about her new book, You’re Not Listening. SJ
