PICK OF THE DAY
MONTY DON’S AMERICAN GARDENS
8.30PM, BBC2 ★★★★★ The green-fingered presenter’s fascinating series is coming to an end this week as he goes west. Monty heads to arid Arizona, where the gardens are a little different – gone are traditional plants, replaced by amazing, huge cacti. The temperatures reach 50°C, and the flora are adapted perfectly. He next visits Palm Springs and Los Angeles, home to the rich and famous, to see how the other half garden – you’ll be left inspired and envious. Monty’s final stop is rainy Seattle and its nearby tropical oasis, Windcliff (right).
THE GREEK ISLANDS WITH JULIA BRADBURY
8PM, ITV ★★★★
Anyone who’s visited Santorini will know how luxurious it is, but it was once one of the Aegean’s poorest islands. Julia learns how it transformed into the haven we know today, and ventures off the beaten path to enjoy a glorious sunset at a hilltop village – and also gets nostalgic over fava beans.
SECRET SCOTLAND WITH SUSAN CALMAN
8PM, CH5 ★★★
The charming wee comic ventures off the west coast to the picturesque Isle of
Skye. There, Susan looks at a magical flag capable of saving the castle just one more time (as legend has it), tries her hand at making sea salt, and hilariously plays an accordion that is almost as big as she is.
GRANTCHESTER
9PM, ITV ★★★★
Murder doesn’t mind romance, as Will finds when someone is killed at the cinema during his first date with Ellie – and that’s after one of his proteges from the boxing gym makes things a little awkward for the pair. It gets even more trying when it seems Jack Chapman may be involved – what darkness lurks in his past? TJ
