Today’s radio
DERMOT O’LEARY
8AM, RADIO 2 HHHH
Niall Horan auditioned for
The X Factor in 2010 as a solo artist, but got press-ganged into joining One Direction, who went on to become the biggest boy band in the world; now, Niall has his second solo album coming out, called Heartbreak Weather. He’ll give a live performance of some of the tracks this morning.
GRAHAM NORTON
10AM, RADIO 2 HHHH
The bestselling Irish novelist Marian Keyes has a new novel out called Grown Ups, and joins Graham this morning. Katherine Kelly, who has joined the cast for the new, second series of Liar, is also on this morning’s show, along with Arlene Phillips, who has news of Grease The Musical.
SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
5PM, CLASSIC FM HHH Wagner’s Ride Of The Valkyries has another life outside of the Ring cycle. This wild, stormy piece of music crops up in films and TV shows, including The Blues Brothers and Baywatch. Its biggest film moment, though, is in Apocalypse Now as the US helicopters come in, low over the sea, bringing death and destruction to a Vietnamese village. Andrew Collins plays the piece, along with other classical works that have found a new audience after being featured in a film.
PATRICK KIELTY’S COMEDY HEROES
9PM, RADIO 2 HHH Martin Short and Steve Martin talk to Patrick Kielty backstage at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Wineries are popular venues in America for comedy shows, but provide lousy acoustics for radio. With a great deal of echo, we hear Martin and Steve plugging their tour and Netflix show, and talking about their careers. There are some good gags and banter in this hour-long programme, but it’s all a bit messy. SUSAN JEFFREYS
