PICK OF THE DAY
THE TROUBLE WITH MAGGIE COLE
9PM, ITV ★★★★
Dawn French is bubbly local historian Maggie Cole, putting her foot in her mouth in a truly spectacular way in this new, six-part series. Life in the beautiful coastal town of Thurlbury seems idyllic, but during an interview with a local radio journalist, Maggie lets the gossip flow – almost as much as the G&TS – and the whole sorry show is broadcast to the entire town. Bracing for the fallout are her loyal husband, Peter, son Jamie and daughterin-law Becka (Mark Heap,
Phil Dunster and Gwyneth Keyworth, right, with French).
SAVING LIVES AT SEA
8PM, BBC2 ★★★★
RNLI crews around the country get to work in all weathers – even in sunshine, there are rescue calls to answer. In the Humber estuary at Cleethorpes, two teens have got stuck in the mud as the tide comes in, while further north, in Loch Ness, there’s a desperate scramble to save a family on their stricken yacht.
TIGERS: HUNTING THE TRAFFICKERS
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★
This desperately sad programme follows Royal Marine turned tiger champion Aldo Kane as he works with wildlife investigators in the
Far East to gather evidence on the shocking trade in farmed tigers, bred for tiger bone wine and glue. The local authorities seem to be turning a blind eye.
100 KILO KIDS: OBESITY SOS
9PM, CH4 ★★★
It’s a shocking statistic that half of Britain’s children are now overweight or obese. This programme comes from a leading childhood obesity clinic in Bristol, and meets three children in dire need of help. One of them is 14-yearold Tommy, who weighs 23 stone, and is admitted for round-the-clock care.
