RAMBLINGS

3PM, RADIO 4 HHH

There’s a labyrinth, cut through the turf into the chalk, on St Catherine’s Hill in Winchester. Some say that it has been there since ancient times, others that itwaswalkedbypilgrimsasa penance – while others hold that it was carved by a schoolboy who had been banished to the hill for bad behaviour. Clare Balding joins a group of people climbing St Catherine’s Hill to walk the 624-metre labyrinth pathway.

6 MUSIC FESTIVAL

4PM, BBC 6 MUSIC HHHH Steve Lamacq will broadcast his regular show from Dingwalls in Camden Town tonight ahead of the 6 Music Festival, which kicks off tomorrow night, and will be broadcast across the weekend.

THE COUNTRY SHOW WITH BOB HARRIS

9PM, RADIO 2 HHHH Smoky-voiced Tanya Tucker is live tonight with songs from her Grammy Award-winning 2019 album, While I’m Livin’. Tanya had her first hit in 1972 – when she was just 13 – with the song Delta Dawn, and has been performing ever since. She has the air of one of those gals in a cowboy film who has spent too long with the bad guys, and has the songs to go with it. The sassy Miss Tucker tells Bob Harris about her career on tonight’s show.

THE ALLOTMENT – TALKING TO THE BEES

11PM, RADIO 4 HHH Paul Whitehouse plays gardener Geoff, who has a bee in his bonnet about a stolen pumpkin. On the hunt for the missing squash, he barges into Esther’s shed on her allotment, interrupting a conversation between her and a lovesick man. In this repeated comedy, Esther’s allotment is, apparently, ‘a quirky, warm world where troubles get lost in the long grass, and small things can bring contentment’. Many a real-life allotment holder could tell a very different story. SJ
