PICK OF THE DAY
BACK IN TIME FOR THE CORNER SHOP
8PM, BBC2 ★★★★
After a baptism of fire with the Victorian era of shopkeeping, the Ardern family (right, with Polly Russell and Sara Cox) arrive at the 1920s this week. Their shop has had a smart makeover, with recognisable brands and a more professional approach to the business.
But Sheffield in the 1920s saw both highs and lows, and in order to survive, shops had to adapt to customers’ changing circumstances. From affluence to poverty, the grocer’s life still involved plenty of hard graft – there was no such thing as convenience in this era.
LOVE YOUR GARDEN
8PM, ITV ★★★★
Alan Titchmarsh and the team set off to Birmingham for a uniquely tasty transformation. Kath, known as The Cake Lady, is a charity volunteer who bakes to raise funds for injured service personnel. Alan not only wants to create an elegant tea garden, but also an outside kitchen and beds abundant with edible ingredients. Yum!
BRITAIN UNDERWATER: FIGHTING THE FLOODS
9PM, ITV ★★★★
After the biblical downpours of storms Ciara and Dennis, this documentary visits some of the worst-hit areas, and meets the devastated residents and business owners who are counting the costs. Cameras also follow workers from the Environment Agency as they struggle to stem the angry tide.
THE WINDSORS
10PM, CH4 ★★★★
This episode introduces Carole and Mike Middleton (hilarious turns from Julia Deakin and Simon Day), who host Charles and Camilla for a weekend of rivalry and misunderstanding. Elsewhere, at a music festival, Beatrice overdoses on ‘gently carbonated water’, and brazen Pippa once again tries to get her talons into Harry. SA
