The new series sits in a well-deserved primetime slot, and among the treasured items to be fixed in episode one is a hat worn by a Lancaster pilot during the Second World War. We learn from his daughter that her mum served as a radar operator, and actually plotted his missions.

Kermode explores the surprising influences behind Batman and Superman, and reveals how the genre tends to thrive in times of economic uncertaint­y. Iron Man, for instance, came out in 2008.
