The new series sits in a well-deserved primetime slot, and among the treasured items to be fixed in episode one is a hat worn by a Lancaster pilot during the Second World War. We learn from his daughter that her mum served as a radar operator, and actually plotted his missions.

Kermode explores the surprising influences behind Batman and Superman, and reveals how the genre tends to thrive in times of economic uncertainty. Iron Man, for instance, came out in 2008.
