PICK OF THE DAY

-

9PM, ITV ★★★★

It’s easy to forget what a huge deal Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was when it began, back in 1998. No one had given away £1 million on UK TV before, and this breezy new drama charts both the show’s creation – by a bunch of swaggering TV types who see themselves as gods – and the great coughing scandal. Michael Sheen gives an eerily accurate performance as Chris Tarrant (right), and Matthew Macfadyen is Major Ingram in a razzle-dazzle, nightly new three-parter that bowls along at a grand old pace, and manages to be both tense and in no way difficult to watch.

MEND IT FOR MONEY

8PM, CH4 ★★★

Tom Allen narrates this competitive twist on The Repair Shop, in which restorers pitch for the right to mend and sell on broken vintage items brought in by the public. Will the sale prices the restorers promise translate into reality, though? The objects tonight include an old gambling machine and a Porsche 928.

SPRINGTIME ON THE FARM

8PM, CH5 ★★★

Social distancing has had its impact on this returning show as Helen Skelton and Adam Henson now host it from their Yorkshire country garden and Cotswold farm, respectively. There are still plenty of lovely sights to see, though, such as the lambing at Cannon Hall Farm and the pigs of Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey).

DOLLY PARTON: 50 YEARS AT THE OPRY

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

They call the Grand Ole Opry the ‘church of country music’ and, when Dolly Parton steps out to sing 9 To 5 in this concert, it certainly feels like she’s singing to her flock. In a TV special to mark 50 years of her being a member, there are also memories from Dolly and music from others. ROBIN WIGGS
