The late Maya Angelou led an extraordin­ary life. As a child, she was shuttled between relatives, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, and didn’t speak for five years after her attacker was murdered. Despite all this pain and trauma, she became a successful singer and dancer, then went on to become a major literary figure, living a life rich in culture and learning. Olivette Otele and Patricia Cumper celebrate the life of a great and inspiring woman. SJ
