WHERE TO WATCH: Australian films
As critic David Stratton concludes his Stories Of Australian cinema (9pm, BBC4), we take a look at where you can watch some of the films featured in the series…
Classics: Survival thriller Walkabout (1971) follows two young siblings stranded in the outback, who encounter an Aboriginal boy, while Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975) is a mystery period drama about a group of schoolgirls who go missing. Available on BFI Player, online or via Amazon, with free trial, then £4.99 per month.
Blockbusters: Australia’s biggest box-office hit, Crocodile Dundee (1986) – starring Paul Hogan (centre) – did wonders for tourism down under. Netflix, Prime, Sky/now TV.
Babe (1995), about a pig who wants to be a sheepdog – and available on
Netflix – was produced by George
Miller, the man behind the influential Mad Max films, which are available to rent on Prime.
Comedies: Two Aussie comedies travelled well in 1994: The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert – available to rent on Youtube and Google Play – and Muriel’s Wedding were huge international hits.
Crime: Chopper (2000), starring Eric Bana in his first film lead, tells the true story of criminal turned author Mark ‘Chopper’ Read, and is available to rent on Amazon, while Animal Kingdom (2010), inspired by a real-life Melbourne crime family, launched a TV spin-off, with series 1-3 on Amazon.
